Rahul Gandhi 1984 riots comment: BJP seeks apology, Sikhs protest outside AICC headquarters

Supporting protests by sikhs in Delhi, BJP on Thursday sought to

keep up the pressure on Congress over the 1984 riots, saying there

was an outburst of "anger" against the "sponsored" violence and

Rahul Gandhi should apologise for speaking a "lie" on the issue.

"Today, the sikhs of Delhi are protesting as they are angry over

Rahul Gandhi's statement on the 1984 riots. The anger and

sentiments of the sikhs are justified as even after 30 years, no one

has been punished," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar told

reporters.

Referring to Gandhi's statement that the then Rajiv Gandhi

government had tried to stop the riots, Javadekar said the

Congress Vice President is "speaking a lie. They were not riots, but

a one-sided sponsored massacre pre-planned by the Congress

party."

He said, "Rahul Gandhi must apologise for the anti-sikh riots as the

Congress party allowed the pogrom to continue for three days and

did not take steps to stop them."

Javadekar insisted that the then Congress government did nothing

to prevent the riots, which he claimed was the only one of its kind

in independent India.

He said the Army was not called and not even a single bullet was

fired by the police to stop the rioters from killing and burning

sikhs alive during the riots.

"You (Congrss) allowed the sikhs to be burnt alive in Delhi. This is

Congress' sin and the Congress will have to answer to the public,"

he said.

Javadekar also hit out at the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for

his reported remarks that "When a big tree falls, the earth

trembles".

Sikhs from Delhi under the banner of SAD today held a

demonstration outside the Congress headquarters against Gandhi's

statement on the 1984 anti-sikh riots seeking to know who were

the Congress leaders which Gandhi in his interview said "may have

been probably involved".
