Reeder, the popular RSS feed reader for iPhone, iPad and Mac, is now free to download from theiTunes and Mac App Store. The price drop is valid for the iPad and Mac versions only, which previously sold for $4.99 each. The iPhone version of Reeder remains paid, and can be downloaded for iTunes for $2.99.

Reeder currently requires a Google Reader account in order to work, and as we all know, the service will be discontinued on July 1st. So will Reeder stay relevant after Google Reader’s demise? According to Reeder’s developer Silvio Rizzi, he will continue to support all versions of the application even after Google Reader is no more.

Rizzi is currently working on integrating Reeder with another RSS feed reader, Feedbin, which costs $2 per month, and writes that he plans to add support for standalone/local RSS as well, although the feature is still in the experimental stage.

The Mac and iPad versions of Reeder include customizable shortcuts, hand gesture navigation, and integration with Evernote. They also support social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinboard, Delicious, Instapaper, Pocket, App.net, and link sharing via email. Other important features include the ability to mark articles as unread, and the ability to manage starred items and notes.

Reeder for the Mac and iPad will be updated to version 2.0 in the upcoming months to include more advanced features which are currently only part of the iPhone app.
