Woman set ablaze for resisting rape attempt dies

The 23-year-old woman, who sustained serious burns after five

persons set her on fire when she resisted their rape attempt three

days ago, died on Saturday, police said.

The victim, who had suffered 90 per cent burns, died in the early

hours while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital. The horrific

incident took place at Railway Quarters at Chilkalguda on January

29.

The victim’s friend, Ishaq, met her near her residence at Railway

Quarters with a plea to marry him. However, she spurned him.

Angered over this, Ishaq along with his friends — Ismail, Shakeel,

Shabbir and Shoukeer — overpowered her and forced themselves

on her. Later, they poured kerosene on her, set her ablaze and

escaped. On hearing her screams, residents from a nearby area

rushed to her rescue and shifted her to the Gandhi Hospital.

Chilkalguda Inspector Y. Mohan said cases under Sections 302

(murder) and 366 (kidnap) of IPC along with provisions of Nirbhaya

Act had been booked against the five accused.
